I didn’t grow up with access to dance studios or structured arts programs. My love for dance came from watching Solid Gold, American Bandstand, and MTV. But the movie Fame changed everything for me.
I dreamed of attending a performing arts high school, where students trained in dance, music, theater, and the visual arts. But that opportunity never came. Instead, I carried that dream with me into education, determined to help others experience what I never had.
From Struggling Arts Teacher to Program Revitalizer
When I first stepped into a K-12 classroom as a dance teacher, I wasn’t walking into a thriving program—I was building one from scratch. Some schools had established programs, but many had nothing more than a wish for one.
I took jobs no one else wanted—not because they were easy, but because they were necessary. Over 20+ years, I built, enhanced, and revitalized arts programs in multiple schools and districts. But I also saw the challenges:
